Yesterday saw the 43rd running of the Parbold Hill Race. It is an old-fashioned cross-country event taking place over farmland and footpaths. It is just one lap of a little under seven miles and includes three hill climbs. The entry is restricted to 500 competitors most of whom are club athletes. Yesterday was said to be by far the muddiest course ever for the event! I had run the race a few times since 1972 but have not been good or lucky enough to get a prize. On the first occasion I had a week to go before I was eligble to run for Salford Harriers so could not score in the team. We had a Canadian international win and my friend Cyril Leigh, a Welsh international was in the first 10 with me not far behind. Cyril and I ran to and from the course from his house in Standish - 5 miles each way - and then I guess we probably did our usual 20 miles+ on Sunday morning!! Salford took second team prize with just three to score. I was really pleased to receive the first over 65 prize yesterday. It's worth considering for next year as it suits fell runners as well as those who enjoy cross-country. The only washing facilities are a pipe with holes to rinse the mud from your legs but the presentation is in Farmer's Arms next to Race HQ.
